Sodium is crucial for nerve function, so disturbances in normal concentrations can interfere with neurons’ proper functionality. Additionally, a study performed by scientist Dr. Harris Lieberman showed that mild dehydration can force the brain to work harder to perform its functions. A study performed by Harvard Medical School showed that severe dehydration can cause the brain to dry out and contract, leading to damage. Furthermore, if you quickly rehydrate after a period of severe dehydration, your brain can swell, leading to brain cell death or ruptures.
