As we age, our dietary needs change. There are foods to be avoided. That’s for sure. There are, however, certain foods that should be consumed over the age of 50. Benefits of eating these “superfoods” include protecting eyes, lungs, heart and brain. You might be surprised to find out what some of them are, and may enjoy them as well. It’s important to get the proper nutrition from the foods you consume after the age of 50. Caloric intake needs change as we age, so nutritious intake is important.
1) Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate, as opposed to white or milk chocolate, is said to have a variety of benefits. WebMD reports that eating dark chocolate in moderation can help to lower blood pressure. It’s also been found to be a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent heart attacks by preventing the arteries from becoming clogged. Some studies say consuming small amounts on a regular basis can decrease the risk of strokes as well. Dark chocolate can also increase brain function, boost memory and is even good for your skin. The flavonoids can protect against sun damage, increase blood flow to the skin, increase skin density and promote hydration. It is advised, however, that you choose a dark chocolate that is organic and made of at least 70% cocoa; the darker the better.
