We all love to eat it but hate its effects: sugar. Most of the food you eat every day has some sugar in it. It is important to check the food label on the foods you consume to find out what ingredients are in it. You may be amazed to find out that the bread you are eating has some added sugar. Consuming an excess amount of sugar every day can lead to serious side effects from decreased motivation to poor skin. Next time you are looking for a snack, skip the sugar and notice a difference in your health and looks.
Sugar is one of the worst things for your skin and body because of its impact on insulin. When a person eats food with high levels of sugar, insulin levels rise throughout the body. As insulin levels rise, the skin produces more oil, especially on the face. Acne is caused by clogged pores and is exacerbated by oil on the skin. However, this does not mean you should avoid all sugars for the rest of your life. It is important to understand the difference between natural sugars and processed sugars. Natural sugars are the ones found in fruits, while processed sugars are added into food. It is okay to eat fruits with natural sugar. The real problem occurs when people eat a lot of food with added sugar like ice cream or white bread.
2) Weight Loss
The first thing that will happen once you eliminate sugar is there will be significantly decrease in your calorie intake. One teaspoon of sugar contains 16 calories. To lose weight, you need to burn off more calories than you consume. By reducing your sugar intake, you can lose weight easier since you will not be trying to burn off at least 16 extra calories or more. Make sure you carefully read the label on all the food you are eating. Some foods that you would not expect to have sugar does, such as bread or ketchup. If you are eliminating sugar from your diet to lose weight, the best way to cut the sugar is to do it gradually. When you are craving sugar, substitute a healthier option such as fruit or yogurt.
3) Lower Your Blood Pressure
Salt may not be your only enemy when faced with hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Recent studies have shown that a high sugar diet may be one of the main contributors to high blood pressure. This study conducted at Louisiana State University demonstrated how drinking one less sugary drink a day over 18 months led to lower blood pressure. This is good news for people who struggle to get their blood pressure under control. While it is difficult to eliminate all the sugar in your life, start by picking up a glass of water instead of that soda you were reaching for. Be on the lookout for an ingredient that says high fructose corn syrup, as this is a harmful artificial type of sugar that multiplies fat cells.
4) Increase Risk of Heart Attack
While it is unknown as to why consuming large quantities of sugar daily leads to an increase in heart attacks, it is known that there is a correlation. Not only does your risk of a heart attack increase but so does your risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease. It is important to take care of your body and treat your heart right. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum six teaspoons of sugar for women per day, and nine teaspoons of sugar for men per day. This is equivalent to about 2/3 of a can of coca cola or two blocks of 85% dark chocolate. The overall goal is to bring sugar down to 10% of the daily calories you consume so that you can live a long healthy life.
5) Break Addiction the Sweets
How many times a day do you feel a sugar craving? If you feel that every day you need to consume sugar, then you may have an addiction to sweets. Often when we talk about addiction we think of hard core drugs. Rarely do we think the food we’re consuming is an addition. When sugar is ingested, it activated parts of the brain associated with drugs like heroin and cocaine. People can go through withdrawals, and experience cravings just like any other drug. To break this addiction, some doctors recommend going cold turkey while others feel that gradually reducing your intake is the best option. Always consult a doctor before making a big dietary change, or to find out which option would be best for you. After breaking this addiction, people have noticed the craving for sugar to be gone and foods taste sweeter.
6) Lower Chance of Diabetes
Consuming high levels of sugars puts you at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. The incidence rate of diabetes has been on the rise This correlates to the increasing obesity epidemic within the United States. With over 29.1 million Americans living with diabetes, this is a serious problem and your sugar habits are something to take note of. Over 90% of these cases are type 2 diabetes, which is caused by a buildup of glucose in the bloodstream due to insulin resistance. Diabetes can lead to life threatening complications such as kidney damage, nerve damage, and eye damage. These are very serious complications that can occur from consuming too many calories every day. One of the best way to prevent diabetes is to eat healthier and lower your calorie intake.
7) Risk of Cancer
A diet high in sugar puts you at a higher risk to develop certain cancers. Specifically, you may be at a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast, colon, or kidney cancer. It is a common misconception that sugar causes cancer to spread faster because cells use glucose to function and grow. This is not the case. However, added sugars in your foods may cause you to become overweight which in turn gives you a higher risk to develop these cancers. If you are concerned that you may have cancer or that your sugar intake may be putting you at a high risk for certain cancers, it is important that you speak to your doctor. Start reducing your sugar intake today and put yourself at a lower risk to develop cancer.
8) Feel More Energized
You may be shocked to find out that consuming less sugar will make you feel more energized. Usually, when people are tired and need a boost they turn to sugary food and drinks to help them put the pep back into their step. People who have quit sugar say they feel more awake and present during the day than when they were constantly fueling up on sugar. They no longer experienced a crash in the middle of the day and their constant cravings for sugar were also eliminated. Healthy food will supply your body with proper nutrients and leave you feeling energized all day. Initially, you may feel more tired because your body is used to consuming high levels of sugar. However, once your body adjusts, usually in 14 days, you will reap the benefits of quitting sugar.
9) Younger Looking Skin
Get ready to get a noninvasive face lift by simply eliminating sugar from your diet. Not only will sugar clear up your skin but it will also make you look younger. Sugar causes your body to produce excess oil. While it does this, it also removes a lot of water from your body leading to an oily complexion and duller skin. People who drink more water and less sugar, notice their face looking vivacious and years are taken off their appearance. Sugar also can cause dark circles under the eyes. These dark circles will make you look older and exhausted. For a fresher, younger looking face, skip the sugar and pick up a piece of fruit. Within one-week people will be noticing the results and asking how you did it.
10) Sleep Better
If you are having trouble sleeping, it could be caused by the food you are eating during the day. Recent studies have shown that people who consume more than the recommended amount of sugar tend to have a harder time falling into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. REM sleep is the most important part of sleep and is when you feel the most rested. If you do not get to this level of sleep you will feel even more tired than when you went to bed. Instead of eating sugar, consider adding more fiber to your diet, as fiber is known to help people sleep easier. While you are eliminating sugar from your diet, it’s important not to take naps throughout the day even if you feel tired. Naps will through off your sleep schedule and cause you to struggle to sleep at night.
11) Improve Your Teeth
Never fear the dentist again with this sure way to improve your teeth. By eliminating sugar from your diet, you are guaranteed to lessen the number of cavities you have. Every person has a plethora of bacteria in their mouth. This bacteria does not cause any issues unless you start eating a lot of sugar. Bacteria will feed on the sugar you consume and produces acid which ultimately leads to cavities in your mouth. If you leave cavities for too long they will dig deeper into your teeth and go past the enamel. This is when cavities start to become a particularly painful experience and cost you a fortune at the dentist. Start skipping your daily sugar intake and your dentist will be impressed with your teeth at your annual checkup.
